Mike Garrigan (JD ’19)

Mike Garrigan WP

Name: Mike Garrigan

Hometown: Greensboro, North Carolina

Why I Chose Wake Forest Law: When I visited Wake Forest Law, I was impressed with the quality of instruction, the small class size and the friendliness among students.

Undergraduate education: I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1997 with a degree in History and Political Science.

Favorite experience so far at Wake Forest Law: The camaraderie of my 1L section (Section 3) has been an oasis in a desert of first year challenges. We support each other. We believe in each other. We have fun while learning the law.

Plans following graduation from Wake Forest Law: Before law school, I ran Two Egrets Media & Recording, a production company that developed upcoming singer/songwriters. I found myself involved in songwriting, music publishing, audio production, audio engineering, video production, brand management and general artist consulting. During law school, I hope to learn transactional procedures and legal thinking that will expand my involvement in the music business. After graduation, I want to be an entertainment lawyer in a mid-sized firm. I am also interested in copyright reform.

Wake Forest Law involvement and other accomplishments: In addition to the 1L curriculum, I participate in the Chief Justice Joseph Branch Inn of Court. I also participate in Wake Forest Law’s many pro bono opportunities. As a non-traditional student with 19 years of work experience, I have been involved in so many things that I am proud of, from writing hit songs to helping recording artists reach their goals. A recent accomplishment is my transition from the studio to the classroom, which has been both a joy and a challenge.

Life outside of law school: I’m a family man. My wife, Holly, works for Cone Health as a Physical Therapist. Our daughter, Ivy, just started kindergarten at Jones Spanish Immersion in Greensboro. Our son, Isaac, is in pre-school. Being a husband and dad takes up most of my free time. I also enjoy reading long novels, listening to LP’s, writing songs, playing guitar and singing.

Fun Fact: In 2013, I participated in a World Cubing Association Rubik’s Cube tournament. While I can solve a Rubik’s Cube in 35 seconds, I did not survive the first round.
